The Rogue Coats Design Archive documents the original concepts that began my journey into independent New Zealand fashion. Created years ago, these early garments helped me develop the design language that continues to shape Rogue Coats today.
Many of the archived designs were inspired by the elegance and structure of the Victorian era, combined with details drawn from military uniforms of the same period. Tailored silhouettes, high collars, decorative fastenings, fitted waists, and dramatic lines became recurring elements in my work. I was drawn to the contrast between Victorian refinement and the strength and practicality of military clothing, using these influences to create garments with character, presence, and individuality.
While studying Fashion and Design at the Southern Institute of Technology in Invercargill, Southland, I was involved in the production of two fashion shows showcasing the work of emerging designers. These experiences gave me an opportunity to explore original ideas, develop my technical skills, and see garments transformed from early concepts into finished pieces presented on the runway.
Since then, my approach has gradually become more focused. Over several years, I have streamlined Rogue Coats into a considered collection of jackets and coats produced in limited numbers. This process has allowed me to refine my aesthetic while remaining true to the sense of originality that inspired my earliest designs.
Today, Rogue Coats specialises in one-off garments made in New Zealand using deadstock fabrics and, in some cases, repurposed men’s suits. Existing materials are reconsidered and transformed into distinctive pieces rather than being overlooked or wasted.
The designs in this archive are no longer available, but each one represents an important stage in the development of Rogue Coats. Together, they tell the story of experimentation, craftsmanship, creative growth, and a lasting commitment to clothing made for individuals rather than the mass market.
